History

1238 – Trnava became the first city in Slovakia to receive city privileges from King Béla IV.

13th–15th century – The city prospered from trade, was an important center of crafts and markets.

16th century – After the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, it became the seat of the Hungarian archbishop, which increased its religious importance.

1635 – The first university in Slovakia was established here, founded by Péter Pázmány.

18th–19th century – Trnava was an important center of education and church, later it also began to develop industrially.

20th century – The city underwent modernization, expanded, and became an important transport hub.

1. City walls

They are among the best-preserved city fortifications in Slovakia.

Built in the 13th century, over 4 km long.

Today, there’s a beautiful walking route around the historical center.

2. St. Nicholas Basilica

One of the oldest churches in Trnava (13th century).

In the past, it was the main parish church of the city.

The interior contains a valuable painting of the Virgin Mary of Trnava.

3. Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Built in Baroque style in the 17th century.

It was part of the first university in Slovakia.

The interior is richly decorated – it’s one of the most beautiful churches in the country.

4. City Tower

Renaissance tower from 1574.

It served as a guard and clock tower.

After climbing up, there’s a beautiful view of the entire city.

5. Former university building

It was founded in 1635 by Archbishop Péter Pázmány.

Today it serves as part of the university campus and museum.

6. St. Anne’s Church and Jesuit complex

Baroque building from the 18th century.
